Chronic Sinusitis (Rhinosinusitis)
Chronic inflammation (irritation?) of the nose & sinuses can cause symptoms of nasal obstruction, facial pressure, nasal drainage, and a decreased sense of smell. Diagnosis of chronic sinusitis requires a thorough medical history, and examination of the nose & sinuses with nasal endoscopy & computed tomography (CT). Nasal endoscopy is a quick, non-invasive & painless office procedure where a small lighted scope is used to examine the inside of the nose and sinuses. CT imaging provides an additional detailed views of the sinuses.
The causes of chronic sinusitis are not completely understood and are being actively researched at multiple centers including the Washington DC Sinus Center. Treatment of chronic sinusitis includes medical therapies such as antibiotics, steroids, anti-inflammatories, sinus irrigation among other newer therapies. Surgery is recommended for patients who do not improve with maximal medical treatment. Endoscopic sinus surgery improves patient symptoms, quality of life, decreases the frequency and severity of sinusitis, and allows the use of additional medical treatments through the nose.
