Allergic Fungal Sinusitis (AFS)

Allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS) is an inflammation of the nose and sinuses as a result of an allergic reaction to certain types of fungi. This reaction causes fungal debris, nasal polyps and thick secretions which obstruct the natural sinus pathways. Severe AFS, may cause sinus obstruction resulting in facial changes, eye and brain compression. Treatment consists of medical management with steroids, immunotherapy, and sometimes antifungal medications. Surgery is important for removing fungal debris, thick secretions, & nasal polyps as well as improving the drainage and ventilation of the sinuses.
